The beautiful villages around the Mont Ventoux: Venasque, 19 km from the holiday home
The houses of Venasque are built on a steep rock overlooking the Nesque valley. In the village you have a fantastic view over the rich Vaucluse plain to the Mont Ventoux.
Venasque certainly invites you to stroll for an hour. It has beautiful manor houses, streets and beautiful squares with fountains.
The village is characterized by 3 monuments:
The towers (Les Sarrasines) stand at the foot of the perched village.
The church with a unique carved altar.
The Baptistry:
The ritual of baptism symbolizes entry into a religious community, the head is sprinkled with water (formerly people were completely immersed) to wash away sins and purify oneself from original sin. After the ritual, one is accepted as a member of the church.
In the early years of Christianity there were no baptisteries. These buildings were created when large groups of children were baptized three times a year. The baptisteries were very large because of the large number of people who had to fit in. Later, the adults were also washed from their sins. Sometimes a baptistery was divided into two parts, one for each gender.
Venasque cherries.
Around mid-April, the cherry trees bloom in the Vaucluse. This region produces a large proportion of French cherries: 25% of cherries intended for direct consumption and even 75% of those intended for processing. Every year at the beginning of June, on the occasion of the first harvest, cherry festivals are organized in Venasque.
You can also eat well in various restaurants: Les Remparts and at Hotel Les Remparts with restaurant Le Petit Chose you have a nice view of the plain from the dining room. At the fountain you have Auberge La Fontaine.
